ROBIN
(18) - Currently living with parents in a small Yorkshire mining town, where nothing remarkable has ever, or will ever, happen. An angry romantic, and a dreamer; he feels stifled and frustrated by his current situation and slams a lot of doors. He should be on his way to ANYWHERE BUT HERE via Bristol Uni. But now he's stuck playing dominoes and getting the rounds in at the local Miner's Welfare with his boring dad and the smalltown boys he went to school with. This didn't happen to Byron! But then Byron didn't get kicked out of Barnsley College for smoking dope.DORIAN
(18) - Openly gay in a subtle rather than in your face way, but can camp it up when he chooses to. Ran away to London at sixteen where he lived in a flat above a shop on Old Compton Street. Has had some sexual experience - not all of it as glamorous or romantic as he would have chosen. He has recently returned to the Nottinghamshire mining town of his birth, ostensibly to lend his father moral support - but really because he was on a downward spiral that might have ended with him becoming a rent-boy. Has a similar taste in decor to his dad, but what his dad sees as sophistication, he sees as camp. The only person who has ever been able to talk to is his sister Marion. Attractive enough to tempt the bi-curious. Is never seen in the same outfit twice.MARION
(22) - Dorian's older sister. An estate flower fading fast and terrified of ending up like her mother and desperate to escape her home town. Geoff is offering her an escape but she isn't sure if a life sipping cocktails on the Costa Del Sol is really her. Intelligent and enigmatic she is a confidante to Dorian and provides him with support, encouragement and make-up tips.GEOFF
(Late 20s) - Proto yuppie, and child of Thatcher; a northern 'Essex man'. First in the village to buy his own council house, has been on a management training course at night school and picked up excruciating management-speak soundbites. Not terribly intelligent - but very focused and driven; in five year's time he will be on a yacht with Marion, like in the Duran Duran video, living the high life - as long as nothing interrupts his timeshare scheme. He is looked up to by his mates who also buy into the dream of betterment, but he knows that they are losers. He has contempt for the sentimentality of the older miners; wears Pastel coloured suits, with the sleeves rolled up, sovereign ring and gold ingot necklace.ROBIN'S DAD
(40s) - Miner, shop steward, caught up in petty bureaucracy and can ramble on a bit, so whilst he may be talking sense people tend to switch off. Wears a flat cap, smokes a pipe and has an absolutely mint allotment. When he first courted Cath, his wife, he bought a scooter. They used to go as far as York to see jazz bands. In fact he was a tiny bit like Robin at one point... but then Robin came along and that was the end of that.ROBIN'S MOM
(40s) - Practical, always makes sure the house is clean and there is food on the table. Would like grandkids, preferably ones that don't go down the pit.DORIAN'S DAD
(40s) - A larger than life character with show-biz connections, (he nearly made it onto opportunity knocks in 1968 and once warmed up for Bernard Manning) who admires Liberace as the epitome of sophistication. He runs the Notts Miners Welfare Club and has no idea that his son is gay, he just thinks he's "a sensitive lad".JACK
(18) - Robin's old mate from school, but they grew apart when Robin went to college. Plays 'jack the lad' but still sharp. Impetuous and unruly, can be embarrassing. Fancies the barmaid and anything in a skirt... though preferably nothing too complicated.JACK'S DAD
(40s) - Rough and ready, salt of the earth. Into pubs and betting shops.BILL KOI
(late 50s) - So-called because he has one of the best collections of Koi carp in the region in a seemingly bottomless pool. Broad Yorkshire but capable of coming out with pearls of wisdom, and exhibits the surprising gentleness and tranquillity that sometimes occurs in working class life, allotments, pigeons, koi carp, bonsai.KEITH
(40s) - Warm-hearted but with a cutting sense of humour. Been married to "er indoors" for donkeys years and is always welcomes an excuse to slip out for a pint.NICK & SKIP
Two brothers, friends of Robin and Jack. Skip is a little slow and often cramps the style of his younger brother Nick who is always trying to ditch him.DEGSY & LITTLE GEOFF
Geoff's friends. Degsy is not very bright and bit of a thug. Little Geoff is an embittered ball of resentment who constantly feels the need to prove himself as 'one of the lads', and is possibly a repressed homosexual.
